From a profound discussion between my son Stuart and myself, we have developed an interesting hypothesis relating to the locational preferences of the now or soon to be undead, in the form of vampires. It was from consideration of instances such as the setting for Quentin Tarentino’s film ‘From Dusk to Dawn’ and other examples of anecdotal literature including the retelling of the ‘Dracula’ myth in the late 1980’s staring David Soul (Yes David Soul, sad but true!), that we began to query why so many modern day undead (vampires) appear to be in the process of relocating to the New Mexico/Southern California area.
One may consider that living in an area bathed in sunshine for the greater part of each day, may be a deterrent for those suffering from ‘exposure to U.V.A syndrome’, a condition in the case of vampires that reputedly can be terminal and inconvenient for those other shady characters that inhabit the shadowy domains of the demonic under world – life insurance salesmen! You may think that the undead would be instead, rushing to buy up holiday homes in Northern Scandinavia, where night lasts for approximately six months, allowing them to indulge in (or endure) activities that would let’s face it, brighten up their image, like gardening and afternoon shopping with their partners. However, we believe that their migration to sunnier climes represents a flaw in the original legend. Contrary to common belief it is not total exposure to sunlight that is fatal to vampires, but exposure to U.V.A rays through the eyes! Therefore, with the marketing of modern stylish sunglasses with U.V.A protective lenses, hey image is everything; it is life if you are a vampire and where else can you get a great pair of sunglasses than Southern California!
